David And Saul - Who Are You?

(A Youth Bible Study Lesson On Respect, Courage and Peer Pressure)

Scripture reading: 1 Samuel 24

Let's have a look at the lifestyles of David and Saul.

David:
kind, forgiving, had courage, lived a life close to God, wanted to please God.

Saul:
cruel, unforgiving, fearful, lived a life away from God, wanted to please people.

It was David's dream to become the next king of Israel. If he had killed Saul when the chance came round, he would've been king "in a jiffy." -(instantly)

Why then did David not make use of the opportunity to kill Saul?

The answer lies in what we call Godly character.

  • David showed respect towards Saul, because he respected the fact that God had placed Saul in the position of king. In the same way we should accept the leadership over us, even if we do not agree with everything that our leaders do.
  • David had courage to oppose his very own group of followers' urge to kill Saul. If your "fan club" dares you to be brave and encourage you to do something that you know is not pleasing to the Lord, think of David and his men.

This courage means:
- David did what he knew was right in the eyes of the Lord.
- David wanted to please God, not his men.

Sometimes we'll do anything it takes to be the hero. But let us be reminded of David's actions and ask ourselves in the future: Am I pleasing God with this attitude or decision? Do I show respect? Do I have courage?

Am I a David, or am I a Saul?

Memory verse: 1 Samuel 24:18
