Midweek Bible Study Lessons - The Body Of Christ

Ephesians 4 Bible Study

Title: Ephesians Bible Study on "The Body of Christ"

Scripture reading: Ephesians 4:1-4

“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,
with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,
endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;”

Ephesians 4:15,16

“…but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head – Christ -
from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

We as “little Christs” or Christians are given the title “Body Of Christ”.

Question 1

Ephesians Bible Study

How are we joined together as a Bible study group or as a group of believers, or a group of fellowshippers?

The Word of God says that we are joined together (by ligaments and sinew in Col 2:19) which means we are all connected.

This again ties in with the word “unity” which seemed to come up in our sermons week after week. Because we are joined and all part of one body, we are able to work together effectively. In other words by us being disjoined or not joined together or our bonds being broken, we are rendered ineffective, and I know we all want to be effective for God!!

Question 2

Ephesians Bible Study

Why should each one be effective?

So we know that we have to as a body be connected or joined to be effective.

Why?

First of all: God loves us and God appreciates us!

Each one of us must do our part. We cannot do what others are meant to do and none of our parts are more important that the other.

We must be faithful and trusting and also seeking constantly that what we are doing is what He wants us to be busy with.

As a part of a whole (like this Bible Study Group), no one can sit back and not do. Each must move so His Body can move and His Kingdom can be advanced.

Only once we do that, do we enable His body to grow!

Question 3

Ephesians Bible Study

Who holds back growth from the Body of Christ?

I think all of us in some way at some stage of our lives hold back the growth of the body. God wants us to realize it’s all about Him, not about us. We have to confess if we hold back the body from growth. We have to confess the things we consider more important than Christ. If we all put our focus on Christ, everything else will fall in place. Let’s not look at one another and let’s not look at who possess what and let’s move away from focusing on earthly, temporary things. I repeat: as soon as you put your one and only focus on Christ, the unity in the Body will fall into place and become stronger and stronger.

Question 4

Ephesians Bible Study

What does your body need to grow?

In this section we’ll compare our natural bodies with the body of Christ and make some comparisons.

  • Our natural bodies cannot grow without LOVE

John 13: 34,35 says “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

We must love each other! Must Must Must !!!

Babies grow faster when loved. This is scientifically proven. So if babies respond so greatly to love, what about adults or children in the Kingdom? We all are part of God’s Kingdom. We all want and need to grow. So we need to accept God’s love for us in order to grow into our full potential as individuals. Corporately we’ll then form a full grown, healthy body. (… or Bible Study Group)

  • Our bodies can’t grow if it’s nod fed.

We all feed ourselves daily, because we know we need to do so, and the same applies in the Kingdom. We need daily feeding, daily Bible study, daily prayer.

We need to feed each other as well, so I need to be careful when I am finding food for you and feeding you. I cannot feed you rotten food that I would not eat! I cannot feed you fodder, it’s not fit for us to consume. Neither can I feed you junk food. The better the quality of food you get from me the faster the Body can will grow. We might consider take aways… healthy ones though!

    Scripture reading: Micah 6:6-8

“With what shall I come before the Lord,
And bow myself before the High God?
Shall I come before Him with
    burnt offerings,
    With calves a year old?
Will the Lord be pleased with
    thousands of rams,
    Ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
The fruit of my body for my soul?
    He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But do justly, to love mercy, And
to walk humbly with your God?”

God says you know, you know what’s required of you. No one needs to tell you. We have all been saved with the same grace, and with a divine purpose, not a mediocre purpose!!

  • Our bodies can’t grow if it is not protected.

We all need protection in the natural from harm and the elements and so on. The same rings true in the Body.

Question 5

Ephesians Bible Study

Do we protect each other? Do we look out for each other?

If my foot gets hurt or injured, am I going to protect it and give it attention? Of course! It’s my foot – without it I can’t move and do what I need to do, so too must it be in the Kingdom. If one is Spiritually injured and not growing, the Body of Christ will struggle to move forward and be effective.

So too must we care for and nurture our part of God’s body. Right here in this Bible Study Group.

Question 6

Ephesians Bible Study

How do we care for each other?

  • We must be fair (show justice) to each other.
  • We must have mercy towards each other, forgive, love, nurture and protect each other and also have humility, esteem others higher than ourselves.

Important Pointers

Ephesians Bible Study

We receive all we need to grow from Christ, because He is the Head of the Body. God wants to emphasize the connectedness of this Bible Study Group. Because we are a part of him, we must stay connected to each other and to Him in order to form a unit that functions according to His Will and to form a perfect unit.

In other words: we should grow together, together, together!

Our bodies grow as a unit. There is no small part that does not grow, and the rest grows as per normal. No, it does not work that way… A newborn baby develops gradually – not the legs until the legs are now a full grown length, then the arms, etc. The same should be true of us as a group.

Without Jesus we cannot grow, and if God prompts us to do, He requires an active response.

Yes, you and me will be required to do things which might be out of our comfort zones. Things that require some courage!

Closing

Ephesians Bible Study

Robin Mark sings:

There’s a place of commanded blessing, where brethren in unity dwell
A place where anointed oil is flowing,
Where we live as one.
You have called us to be a body,
You have called us as friends,
Joined together in the bond of the Spirit,
Unto the end.”

(Give the group opportunity to discuss a few things, or let them share and witness things they had done in the past which were new things. Things which maybe made them feel uncomortable of doing, though it was the right thing to do at that time. Give the group time to encourage one another. Now challenge each one to do something new, like going to pray for a friend in need or anoint someone with oil, etc.)
