Title: “Get Your Reward”

Scripture reading: Luke 19:11-27

Jesus uses this parable to explain and remind his disciples and those who were there, that He’s coming soon. Jesus had invested in each one something, and when He’d return, He was expecting more.

Besides being “happy” about Jesus’ return – what is expected of me? Each one of us will be held accountable. We have gifts and things inside of us (planted in us by God) that have not yet manifested. Maybe because we just keep it bottled up inside us and we feel inferior.

Matthew 16 verse 27 says, “For the Son of man is going to come in His Father’s glory with His angels. Then He will reward each person according to what he has done.

Am I Doing Enough?

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

Besides our anticipation for Christ’s return, I’m also thinking now…

  • ”Is what I’m doing enough?”
  • ”What kind of reward will I get at the end of the day?”

Don’t you think the same?

Revelation 2 verse 12 says, “Behold, I’m coming soon. My reward is with me.” This leaves me to re-evaluate just how I spend my time. We know that everything that we have is Gods and we are merely stewards of that.

Like the parable explains – when He comes back, He will expect much more than what was given.

Some Questions:

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

  • So how do we spend our time
  • Do I set aside time for the Lord and His work?
  • Do I share the same desire and intensity for the things of God and the extension of His Kingdom?
  • Do I use my money wisely so that other may get to know Christ by the way I spend my money?

Jesus uses various parables even before that. Luke 16 explains how we should use our money and use it to the extension of God’s Kingdom.

“To whom much is given; much is expected.”

There’s enough work to do in the Kingdom, do you agree? There is just so much work to do! But how will we ever accomplish that? Each one of us came into the earth with a solution, with a gift, with something within us. If I think about myself also. It started off as humble beginnings, and where I’m now… being able to do various things out of walking in obedience to the Holy Spirit. Things that I didn’t know I could do, were hiding inside of me.

A Personal Testimony

So I consider the coming of Christ as a “graduation”.

I want to share with you quickly something from my personal life:

When I was studying at Technikon, I didn’t want to go to any graduation ceremonies before I graduated. I wanted to ‘soak in’ my own graduation. Finally the night of my graduation comes and I even got my parents VIP seats to sit with dignities and so on. For those of you who haven’t experienced it: the choir of the university or technikon are singing; you have your robe. You just feel so ‘This is it! I’ve made it!’ But then as the ceremony goes on, special mention is made to those students who passed ‘cum laude’. Now my beautiful wife also passed her grade ‘cum laude’. When I graduated, I didn’t.”

So having seen the ceremony and everything the university puts into it to make it such a grand occasion, and seeing the special mention to the outstanding students standing separately from the others, made me think of my own life.

When it comes to my life, and the work of the Lord, I don’t want to experience that again.

Rewarded According To What We've Done

Let’s just look at that verse in Matthew again, “For the son of man is going to come in His Father’s glory, with His angels and then will reward each person according to what he has done.”

This means that God is not going to come and just dish out our rewards randomly. No, each one of us will have to stand and give account for what we’ve done on earth. How have we utilized our time and our finances to enhance the Kingdom of God?

I just don’t want the standard reward. I want to achieve the best reward that I can obtain. We know that this earthly life is temporary.

Time Passes Quickly

Time flies so quickly! When I sit here and give piano lessons on a Tuesday, I’m thinking “Kim, Sasha, Kaylynn…” how come you guys are here again? Haven’t I seen you just the other day? Sometimes it feels like Sunday was just yesterday.

We really need to evaluate how we spend our time and we need to set aside time for God.

The Bible Tells Us What To Expect:

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

  • We know that He’s coming.
  • We know that there is a reward.
  • We also know that a reward will be given to each one according to what he has done.

Having known all this – why is it that sometimes we don’t do what we’re supposed to do? Life has so many things that keeps us busy. Why don’t we “produce” if we know how intense the second coming will be?

Matthew 16:18 says, “And I tell you that you are Peter; and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it."

God Saw In Peter What Others Failed To See

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

His given name was Simon which means “meek”; “flakey”; “unstable”… When somebody approaches you this morning to do something for the Kingdom, are you meek? Do you feel unstable, flakey and “…oh no, this is not for me…”?

God Sees Past That!

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

Do you know what? God sees past that! He sees what He puts inside of you. The only thing he wants from you, is what He’s put in. He can’t expect anything more than that.

So God saw a stone in Peter and finally at Pentecost, Peter’s true nature was revealed. 2 Timothy 2:15 says, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approve a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

Who Are We?

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

We will never discover who we were meant to be if we use another person to find ourselves. I can’t compare myself to X-Y-Z and think that’s how I’m supposed to be. We need to look to God, our Creator – not the creation.

Three Words To Describe God

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

There are three words that describe God:

  • omniscient - God is all knowing.
  • omnipresent - God is present everywhere.
  • omnipotent - God is always “potent” and always full of power.

His omnipotence is a quality that God has put inside of us. The quality of having potential in each of us.

We are capable of doing so much in the Kingdom. That’s why He sees past the flakiness and the instability. God sees a rock!

Two Opposites

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

Here we have two opposite things. The way God sees us opposed to the way we see ourselves. God sees someone who is firm, who is unshakable and who is solid. God wants you to see yourself that way too.

Once you come past all that, you can start focusing on what God really wants you to accomplish.

We share the same quality that God has: the ability to be potent. He planted within each person the ability to be much more than what you are at the moment.

Our potential is the dormant ability, reserved power and untapped strength.

The very same thing was revealed when Peter spoke at Pentecost. That was always there, I believe, inside of him and Jesus was calling him “Peter” the whole time. It was only through the working of the Holy Spirit that it’s revealed.

Philippians 12 says, “Not that I have already obtained all this or that I’ve already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it, but one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward.”

What Holds Us Back?

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

Sometimes I think it’s not only the insecurity that we have about ourselves that holds us back from obtaining further victories, but it’s also the successes that we had.

We brood over success of yesterday and the victories that we had. Some people in the church will tell you that they were e.g. “youth leader” for a year or two at a particular church and that, they feel, was their contribution to the Kingdom. So now they sit back and for the rest of their lives, you get nothing more out of them. And yet, I’ve just said that God has given us the quality to be potent. There’s the ability to produce something new… All the time!!!

The Bible says in Isaiah 43:18&19, “Remember not former things; neither consider the things of old. Behold! I will do a new thing!”

"A New Thing"

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

God wants to do a new thing. A new thing every day. I discover things as I apply His Word; as I walk in obedience through the power of the Holy Spirit. I’m able to do new things!

If I was just “the guy behind the keyboard”, and I was content with that, I would never obey the voice of the Holy Spirit to share this message this morning. You wouldn’t be able to hear (read) this message.

Paul says he is “forgetting what is behind” and “straining to what is ahead.”

Two Words - Pressing And Straining

Free Online Sermons - "Get your reward"

There are two words that I like that Paul uses there. He speaks about “pressing” and “straining”.

Pressing and straining only happens when there is resistance. There’s always going to be something that is going to stop you or try and stop you from reaching what you’re supposed to.

When you look at a gangster… he’ll try and rob the person which he perceive has something. He’ll go for someone who has something of value. In the same way, the devil will keep on trying to get through to you. He knows you have something of value.

He doesn’t want you to know your true worth!

But God call you a rock this morning. He sees past that!

In Timothy Paul also writes about the “stirring up of the gifts”. We have so many people here with gifts and I’m sure besides what I see and what I’ve already seen, I know that there is much more inside each one of you!

Sometimes we take it at face value that “this one is only a prayer warrior”; that one “is only a musician…” and yet the God who created us, gave us the quality of being potent; being able to produce; forgetting what is behind; forgetting what we have already achieved.

We need to stir! If you don’t shake these fruit juices that we buy in the cartons, at the bottom you’ll get more of the pulp and the top part will taste watery. Without shaking, it doesn’t taste the way it’s supposed to taste.

You need to shake it! Tell yourself: “Shake it!!”

My prayer is that you’d be encouraged by this sermon. That you would intensify the work that you are doing in the Kingdom of God. That you would continue to press and strain towards the prize.

Remind yourself that, besides the coming of Christ, there will be a day of reward. Look inside yourself and ask, “Am I doing enough?”
