What Is Communion About?

Short Sermon Preached At House Of Praise Home Church

Kuils River

The Holy Communion

We all know and understand more or less what is communion about, but every now and again we have to be reminded exactly what the Holy Communion is all about.

It is good for the younger ones in church - our children - to be reminded why we have the bread and why we have the wine.

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:23-38

What does the bread mean?

  • The bread that we break, represents the Body of Christ that is broken on the cross.
  • Christ's Body was sacrificed for our sins.
  • We should think of the sacrifice that Christ has made.

What does the wine mean?

  • The cup represents the Blood of Christ that was shed on the cross and this blood sealed the covenant that was made. That's the good part! This is the covenant that God has made with us.
  • We all accepted Christ as our Saviour and in that, we believe that Christ will come again to redeem us in this world, because this is the covenant that God has made with us.
  • We will have eternal life and we are all waiting for Christ to return to this world.

Introspection At Communion

  • It is a time to examine ourselves and think of the work of Christ within our lives.
  • It is a time of Spiritual reflection and soul searching.
  • Allow the Holy Spirit to remove all hinderances and obstacles we placed in God's way, or those things we have allowed to be placed in God's way.

What is communion? It is a gracious act and it's a time of thanksgiving and happiness that God will come again to this earth. It is gracious for what God has done, for what He is doing now and what He will be doing in the future for us.

One Big Family

If you think of this bread, remember that it's made with a multitude of hands. You need flour and wheat and many hands are used to prepare this loaf of bread.

The same with the wine. The wine is made with many hands to produce one cup.

So we as a community - fellow brothers and sisters - participate in this one cup and this one bread. We should look at each other and have peace with each other.

This is why we give thanks to God - that we have a special opportunity to share in this bread and cup.

Sometimes we take it for granted and it becomes only a ritual. This is indeed one of the most sacred rituals that we as Christians perform. It is something beautiful and special. We must continue to Praise and Worship Christ for what He has done for us. In such a way we can fuel our Christian Life.

In memory of Christ and what He has done for us!

Amen.

Communion Prayer

"Father God,
Thank you that we can be here together to share in Your communion.
Thank you that we can be sons and daughters of the Living God!
As the table is prepared for us, will You please prepare our hearts to receive the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation.
Let us partake, as your Word says, in remembrance of You.
Let us be reminded of Your Glory that is still to be revealed.
I pray that if there is anyone in need, let this moment not pass us by.
I pray that Your blessing might be upon us today.

Amen"
